ASSESSMENT BASED ON DATA IN PERFORMANCE REVIEWS

A performance review is a formal assessment in which a manager evaluates an employee's work performance, identifies strengths and weaknesses, offers feedback, and sets goals for future performance. Performance reviews are also called performance appraisals or performance evaluations [bamboohr.com, 2021].

Data-based assessment is basically termed as a process that relies heavily on factual data to make informed judgments and decisions about managing employee performance [upraise, 2021].

Three stages are considered while assessing performance reviews.

01. Pre-assessment:

  • Online objective reviews.
  • Look for competencies and reviewers.
  • Design simulation exercises.
  • Choose a rating method.

02. During assessment

  • Explaining the purpose and policies
  • Using the competency exercise matrix
  • Conducting exercises and discussions
  • Noting strengths and weaknesses,

03. Post assessment

  • Collecting feedback from reviewers
  • Evaluating the validity of results
  • Share the feedback with employees.
  • providing further training if required [kissflow.com, 2021].

Reviews are categorized into the main 4 items.

01. Self-reviews: Self-appraisals offer employees a chance to look back at their performance and understand their strengths and weaknesses.

02. Peer reviews: These reviews help to determine an employee’s ability to work well with the team and take up initiatives.

03. Customer or client reviews: This can evaluate the output of an employee better. However, these external users often do not see the impact of processes or policies on an employee’s output.

04. Managerial reviews: will include individual employee ratings awarded by supervisors as well as the evaluation of a team or program done by senior managers.

Avoidable Things in Performance Review

[i] Criticism without an example: Rather than making an employee defensive, setting an example and providing suggestions for improvement will assist them to enhance their performance.

[ii] Employee comparisons: This is not the place to rate or compare employees. Concentrate solely on the performance of the employee being evaluated.

[iii] False praise: While it's important to find something nice to say in every performance evaluation, delivering false praise will simply lead an employee to believe they're doing better than they are, robbing them of the chance to develop.

[iv] Speculation: Spreading rumors about the firm or raising expectations for a raise or promotion that may or may not be attainable leads to unnecessary speculation and disappointment.

[v] "Always" and "never": there is an exception to every rule. Ultimatums and broad generalizations are rarely accurate, and they can make people defensive.

Conclusion

Based on the data that the company has regarding an employee’s performance, an assessment will be made and the output might be favorable to the employer if he/she performed well. On the other hand, if the employee’s performance is insufficient, the company will try to provide extra care to involve the employee in the work.
